Like so many Montana towns, Glasgow began as a railroad town in the 1880's. Today its economy is heavily dependent on agriculture. Wheat, alfalfa, and barley are the main crops and a large number of beef cattle herds are raised there as well. In addition to agriculture, the economy is also supported by the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad, Frances Mahon Deaconess Hospital and the Glasgow School District. Water pastimes such as fishing, swimming, and boating are popular on the nearby Missouri River and Fort Peck Lake.
